The Association of Solid Minerals Miners and Marketers of Nigeria (ASMMMON) has expressed deep sorrow over the tragic mining site explosion that occurred in Kampani Zurak, Plateau State, which led to the loss of lives and left several others injured.
In a condolence message issued from its National Headquarters on 20 February 2026, the Association described the incident as a painful moment for the mining sector and the nation at large. ASMMMON conveyed its heartfelt sympathies to the affected families, friends, and host communities, while offering prayers for the speedy recovery of those receiving medical care.
The Association reaffirmed its solidarity with its Plateau State Chapter, particularly the State Chairman, Sani Babayaro, and all members operating within the state, noting that this is a period that calls for unity, reflection, and collective responsibility.
ASMMMON also commended the prompt response of relevant authorities, including the Honourable Minister of Environment, Balarabe Abas Lawal, and the Executive Governor of Plateau State, Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang, for their swift intervention and the immediate safety measures deployed in the affected areas.
According to the Association, the incident underscores the urgent need for stricter enforcement of health, safety, and environmental standards across mining operations in Nigeria. ASMMMON called on the Federal and State Governments to provide adequate moral and financial support to victims and their families, while strengthening regulatory oversight in mining communities.
The Association further emphasized the importance of responsible mining practices, environmental sustainability, and community development initiatives that align with national objectives for solid minerals development and global best practices. In this context, ASMMMON reiterated its advocacy for the introduction of a mandatory Comprehensive Insurance Scheme (CIS) for miners and marketers of solid minerals nationwide.
ASMMMON concluded by praying for the repose of the souls of the departed and reaffirmed its commitment to promoting safer, more sustainable mining practices that protect lives and livelihoods across the country.
