Nigeria possesses one of the most diverse and widely distributed solid mineral deposits in Africa, with commercially viable resources spread across all six geopolitical zones. These mineral deposits are closely linked to the country’s geological formations, including the Precambrian Basement Complex, Younger Granite Complexes, and Sedimentary Basins. The North-Central zone serves as the nation’s solid minerals hub, hosting large deposits of tin, columbite, iron ore, limestone, gold, and barite across states such as Plateau, Nasarawa, and Kogi. The North-West is notable for gold and other metallic minerals, while the North-East contains important industrial minerals such as gypsum, coal, limestone, and barite. In the South-West, industrial minerals like limestone, bitumen, granite, and gold support Nigeria’s construction and manufacturing sectors, with Ogun State standing out as a major cement-producing region. The South-East is historically recognized for coal and industrial minerals, particularly in Enugu and Anambra States, whereas the South-South zone contains limestone, silica sand, barite, and clay alongside its well-known oil and gas reserves. Collectively, these resources provide significant opportunities for industrialization, regional economic development, job creation, and export growth if properly managed through sustainable mining practices, infrastructure investment, and effective institutional support.
